Why you shouldn’t use digital zoom

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Most modern phone cameras have a zoom function. If its digital, don’t use it. A digital zoom does not give you photographs with more detail. All they do is crop a part of the unzoomed picture and make the pixels larger. You can do this yourself if you have the unzoomed photo. Then you also have the possibility of trying different croppings, something you can’t do to zoomed photos.

If you have a cell phone with optical zoom, that’s a completely other story. Optical zoom use lenses to get you closer to your subject. If you keep the camera still, optical zoom can give you better pictures.

How do you know if it's digital or optical?

As a rule it’s digital. Only some high-end phones have optical zoom and then they generally advertise that.
